How to Install Our LED Bathroom Mirrors: A Step-by-Step Guide
Can you plug an LED bathroom mirror into a socket, or must it be hardwired? Our powered, wall-mounted LED bathroom mirrors can be supplied by either a plug and suitable mains socket or a fixed hardwired connection. The mirror itself supports both methods; which installation is appropriate depends on the bathroom layout, the location and suitability of the socket, and the instructions for the particular mirror. This statement is about bathroom mirrors, not our separate makeup mirrors. Check a makeup mirror's own product page and instructions for its power options.
Choose the power method before you mount the mirror
| Option | When it may suit your bathroom | Essential check |
|---|---|---|
| Plug and socket | A suitable, compliant socket is already within reach of the supplied lead, with a safe cable route. | Have the socket location and circuit checked against the bathroom layout and current UK electrical requirements. Do not use a shaver-only outlet or extension lead. |
| Hardwired connection | You want the cable concealed or there is no suitable socket at the planned mirror position. | Arrange a qualified electrician to make and test the fixed connection according to the mirror's instructions and applicable UK requirements. |
A plug-in option does not mean that an ordinary socket can be installed next to every basin. UK bathrooms and shower rooms have restrictions on socket placement and electrical equipment. If you are unsure whether the existing outlet is suitable, ask a qualified electrician before purchasing or fitting the mirror. Electrical Safety First's bathroom guidance explains why an extension lead is not an acceptable workaround.
Before installation: size, position and bathroom suitability
- Measure the wall and vanity. Check mirror width and height, tap clearance, nearby cupboards, wall lights and any shower screen. Our mirror size calculator can help you choose a starting size.
- Check the wall and fixings. Identify whether the wall is masonry, stud or tiled plasterboard. Use fixings appropriate for the wall and the weight of the selected mirror; never rely on adhesive alone for a heavy electrical mirror.
- Check the exact model. Read its installation instructions, electrical rating, IP rating and permitted bathroom position. The protection needed depends on proximity to the bath or shower and the actual installation, not the photograph on a product page.
- Plan the power route. Decide with your installer where the lead or fixed supply will enter and how the mirror will remain accessible for inspection and maintenance. Do this before drilling or final wall finishes.
Option 1: Plug-in power
If a suitable mains socket is already available in a permitted position and the mirror's lead reaches it without strain, the mirror can be powered by its plug. Follow the supplied instructions for mounting and keep the lead away from water, hot surfaces, sharp tile edges and places where it may be trapped behind the glass. A shaver-supply unit is not a general-purpose mains socket. Do not run an extension lead into the bathroom or improvise a connection to reach an unsuitable outlet.
Where there is no suitable socket, do not assume that adding one beside the mirror is a minor DIY job. Ask a qualified electrician to assess the room and advise whether a compliant socket or a fixed connection is the better choice.
Option 2: Hardwired power
Our LED bathroom mirrors can also be connected to fixed wiring. Have a qualified electrician assess the existing supply, bathroom zones, circuit protection and the manufacturer's connection instructions, then make and test the connection. The electrician should confirm the correct arrangement for the exact model, including any supplied plug or lead. Do not cut off a plug, strip wires or connect conductors yourself using generic colour diagrams. Those steps depend on the product and the existing UK installation.
Hardwiring can keep the cable out of view, but it may require targeted electrical work. Agree the cable position and mirror height before tiling, painting or drilling so the connection and mounting points line up.
What this guide does and does not cover
The two power choices above apply to our powered LED bathroom mirrors. They are not a blanket specification for makeup mirrors, Hollywood mirrors, dressing-table mirrors or plain unlit decorative mirrors. For those products, use the power information on the individual product page and in the supplied instructions.
The mounting overview does not replace the instructions supplied with a particular mirror or an electrician's assessment of the bathroom. An IP rating on one model should not be assumed for another. If the proposed position is close to a shower or bath, or the wall or wiring is in poor condition, resolve those issues before fitting the mirror.
Frequently asked questions
Do all your LED bathroom mirrors have to be hardwired?
No. Our powered LED bathroom mirrors support plug-in or hardwired power. The safe choice for your home depends on the location of a suitable socket, the bathroom layout and the model's instructions.
Can I plug an LED bathroom mirror into a shaver socket?
Do not treat a shaver-only outlet as a standard mains socket for the mirror. Ask an electrician to identify the outlet and recommend a suitable supply method.
Can I use an extension lead?
No. Do not use an extension lead to bring power into a bathroom or to compensate for a socket that is too far from the mirror.
Does this power guidance apply to makeup mirrors?
No. Makeup mirrors are a separate product range. Check the selected makeup mirror's own specifications and instructions for its power method.
Do I need an electrician?
Use a qualified electrician for a fixed hardwired connection and for any new or altered bathroom electrical installation. If you are uncertain whether an existing socket or the proposed location is suitable, ask an electrician to assess it before using the plug-in option.
Once you have confirmed the room, power method and wall size, compare LED bathroom mirrors by dimensions and features. If you need model-specific installation details, contact our UK team with the product link and a description of the planned location.
